According to our architects and designers, house plan purchasers want to maximize usable space and prefer smaller, better-designed homes with high-end, green features, rather than homes with lavish amenities and too much extra space.
Based on the collection of house plans we sold this year and conversations with our consumers, we have put together a list of five home designs trends that we believe you can expect to see in the coming year – smaller homes, open floor plans, dual home offices, green details and outdoor living spaces.
1. Small is the new big. A shift toward “smaller, better-designed homes” has been occurring for quite some time and our designers continue to add new designs ranging from 1,400-2,800 square feet. What makes these smaller designs so effective is that have flexible living spaces so your home can adapt to your changing lifestyle and needs. Common flexible spaces include rooms that can be combined to create in-law suites, home offices (even his and hers), music/media rooms, craft or hobby rooms, dens that can become guest rooms and dining rooms that can become offices.
2. Open floor plans remain popular. Flexible and open floor plans where the kitchen opens up into the dining room and family room continues to be one of the most sought after features in a house plan. It is especially popular with homeowners who enjoy entertaining. The economy has also impacted this trend, since instead of going out for dinners all the time, homeowners are spending more time at home entertaining family and friends.
3. Dual home offices. Because of two-income families, there has been a rise in demand for extra office space. Many new home plans feature more than one flexible office space. In many cases there are several workstations (laundry room, master suite, kitchen area, great room) to accommodate the busy schedules of working parents.
4. Interest in green products. Interest in affordable, eco-friendly home details is increasing, especially as consumers continue to become savvy about green home building. Some of these new products include concrete counter tops, tankless water heaters, recycling bins built into kitchen cabinets, eco-friendly flooring, water-efficienty bath products and so much more. You””ll find many new home builders looking into alternative home insulation techniques to efficiently heat and cool their home.
5. Extending the indoors outside. There””s a big interest in making full use of ALL their living space, including outdoor areas. That means outdoor living enhancements such as fire pits, pools and patios and kitchens are allowing homebuyers to enjoy as much of their property as possible, for a much longer time.
Bottom line, house plan purchasers are looking for a functional space that is well-designed, efficient to build and maintain and that compliments their lifestyle. This is a big change from prior years when people believed “bigger was better.”

Today the garage door is a major component to achieving curb appeal, which is why our architects and designers spend a great deal of time selecting the perfect garage door to complement their house plans.
The selection of garage doors is as plentiful as your choice in front entry doors (you should choose both together) and with many of the same attributes – beauty, efficiency, durability, custom glass and hardware, insulation and of course safety.
Nowadays most garage door manufacturers allow you to create a custom door using their free door design tools. You can upload a photo of your home and experiment with panel designs, color options and window styles before you even open your checkbook. All of architects and designers recommend using Wayne-Dalton Garage Doors because they offer a wide range of high quality products and accessories to complement all architectural styles. For high-end homes, they offer one of the finest collections of hand-built wooden garage doors.

On September 8, 1900, the deadliest hurricane in American history made landfall on Galveston Island along the Gulf coast of Texas. The twenty-foot storm surge wiped out entire neighborhoods in one of the nation’s busiest ports. The next day, thousands lay dead.
Ultimately, the storm was a dramatic turning point for the island. Up until that moment, Galveston’s residences and businesses were mostly at sea level. As a result, many homes had become death traps during the storm surge. The islanders learned from their mistake, however.
Galveston residents threw their hearts into the recovery. They created house plans that properly matched their environment. They designed and built a twenty-foot seawall, elevating the entire island in the process. The houses that did survive the storm were raised on stilts to ensure that residents would never again have to face a hurricane’s surge.
Today, we now design homes that protect us during storms and earthquakes, as well as other environmental dangers. Some southern house plans did include a raised first floor so that families could stay safe during storm surges and flash floods. Many homeowners along the Gulf coast eventually followed the standards set by those southern house plans.
Having the right house plans to match one’s environment is essential for safety. If you live on a steep incline, you should find a professional who can create the right hillside house plans for your needs. An unexpected torrential rain could trigger a catastrophic mudslide. On the other hand, if you live in Tornado Alley, you might want to make sure that your house plans include a basement.
Overall, you wouldn’t build a house on quicksand, so why would you equally endanger your family by choosing the wrong house for the wrong environment? In the end, make sure you get an expert to help design the right house for the right environment.
Different people have different ideas about the American Dream. Some people think that it is financial stability. Quite a few believe that it means living a long, happy life with loved ones. In the end, everyone’s notion of the ideal life in the United States is different. Nevertheless, there are many common themes of the American Dream.
Everyone can agree that owning a house is an important part of the American Dream. A home conveys the notion that you have triumphed over the uncertainties of life and have provided a safe shelter for your family. It is a place where you can create your best memories, where you can nurture your children and prepare them for the world. Ultimately, being a homeowner also means that you have invested in something that can bring even greater financial stability to you in the long run.
Another aspect of the American Dream is essential to many people—your house must convey the same sense of individualism that is reflected in your country’s heritage. Americans embrace their individuality; they love their independence. They simply do not want to settle for living in a house that seems mass produced and boring. After all, your house reflects the fact that you are a free individual living in a home that perfectly suits your style and individuality.
In order to find that unique house that fits your idea of the American Dream, you need to contact the right house designers. These experts should be able to draw up a variety of custom house plans for any project. In the end, the right designers will create a wide range of sketches, regardless of whether you want custom house plans or traditional house plans.
Owning a home says, “I am independent. I am successful and responsible enough to own a beautiful house.” To make sure that your house conveys these themes, get the right house designers to create that masterpiece that you will love to call home.
